Questions people ask before booking
Starting counselling brings up a lot of questions. Here are the ones I hear most often.
Still wondering about something?
Call the direct line or send a quick question. I'm happy to help.

How do I know if we're a good fit?
The relationship between you and your counsellor is one of the biggest predictors of how helpful counselling feels. That's why the first step is a free 15-minute phone or video call. We can talk about your goals and see whether my approach feels right for you.
Do I need a doctor's referral?
No. You can book directly. Some extended health plans ask for a referral before they reimburse, so check with yours.
Counsellor or psychologist: what's the difference?
Registered psychologists in BC have doctoral training and can provide formal assessments and diagnoses. As a Registered Clinical Counsellor, I hold a master's degree and provide counselling and therapy, which often costs less per session. Many extended health plans cover both, sometimes under separate amounts.
How do I book?
Book online through Jane, the secure platform used by Empowering Health Clinic, or call the direct line at 250-216-5584.
Where are you located?
In-person sessions are at Empowering Health Clinic, Unit 204, 1711 Cook Street in Victoria. Online sessions are available to anyone in British Columbia.
Sessions
How long are sessions, and how often?
Standard sessions are 50 minutes, with 80-minute sessions available for people who want longer sessions or come every two weeks. Some people come weekly, others every two weeks or monthly.
Do you offer online sessions?
Yes. Secure video sessions run through Jane for anyone located in British Columbia. About online counselling
What's your cancellation policy?
Please give 24 hours' notice to cancel or reschedule so the time can go to someone waiting for support. Late cancellations may be charged a fee.
Cost & coverage
Will my insurance cover sessions?
Coverage depends on your plan. Many extended health plans cover a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) or Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC). You'll get a receipt after each session to submit for reimbursement.
Do you direct bill?
Yes, to three programs: the ICBC Recovery Network, the Crime Victim Assistance Program, and the First Nations Health Authority.
Do you offer a sliding scale?
I believe in equal access to mental health care. If cost is a barrier, reach out and we'll talk about eligibility and current sliding-scale availability.
Approaches
What is EMDR?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a well-researched therapy for trauma and PTSD that can also help with grief, anxiety, and depression. About EMDR therapy
Do parents take part in youth counselling?
Sometimes. Trauma-Focused CBT includes occasional family sessions that help you support your teen at home and at school. About youth counselling
